More than sunshine (an original poem)

More than sunshine -

It was worth more
than a smile
when I planted you
in the ground

and the sunshine wouldn’t reach you
there beneath the soil
I didn’t want it to —
so I watered you with words
like a passion’s prayer, with praise
and pride and all that makes a man,
red like the grin on your face

You grew tall, and taller still
but, the sunshine wouldn’t touch you.
Your petals shone crimson bright,
like contradictory light,
and your leaves grew greener
with jealousy’s might.
But, the sunshine wouldn’t meet you
there—though you had hoped
for a glimpse of gold.

And when I plucked you
from the ground
there was no wince, nor pain
or sound,
and your petals fell
about the floor,
where the soul rests
and freedom’s found.
